Sorry to hear of the mishap.
It is best to go with multple undersized heaters instead of one high wattage heater. This way if it should "stick on" it will not have enough power to boil your fish. Also if it were to fail the other heaters will somewhat keep the tank heated until the failed heater can be replaced.
