I've got a mixed South American Cichlid tank and there's one firemouth left (he killed the other 2 firemouths that were in there, but for some reason leaves everyone else alone) and he ends up eating everyone else's food. I have to make sure his mouth is full before I can go about feeding anyone else in the tank.

You can see a noticeable bulge in his stomach, and realize he may end up eating himself to death...but I'm new to this and was wondering if there are any tricks to keeping a greedy feeder at bay. This is my first post on here, thanks!

how big is this bully anyway. I have 1 at the moment and he tends not to let anyone else bully him either, he is a small fellow compared to others in tank. what exactly are you feeding him that he loves so much.

LOL...Everyone always used to tell me firemouths were all bark and no bite, they were wrong! I have a pair of firemouths and they are nasty little ****s. I love em!!!! They are very eager at feeding time (I have a m/f pair) but the only tankmates they have are 4 Buenois Aires tetras...they are fast enough to get some food.

Anyway, try feeding or somehow distracting the firemouth, how big is he and how big are the other fish? Maybe TRY to find a food he won't eat or cannot fit in his mouth. Either way....good luck.

Currently I feed the other fish sinking shrimp pellets, hikari sinking carnivore pellets, and floating cichlid staple. He eats EVERY ONE of those foods, even if he cant fit it in his mouth. He's probably about 2.5", and peacefully co-habitates with 2 blood parrots and 2 clown loaches. Its a wierd mix of a tank, but everyone seems to get along just find. The clowns don't take crap from the firemouth or the bps.
