essentially, africans have huge long guts, occassionally they get blocked,...from what i understand, bloat is caused by a parasite in the gut...
they begin to look very large bellied, getting rounder by the day, sometimes hour, eventually they refuse to eat and will die if not treated...normally if you watch your fish, you will see affected fish acting a bit sluggish...hanging back a bit, not eagerly coming foward when you come to feed them.....sucking in bits of food but spitting it back out...
treatment we have found normally 99% effiective, we use Arg, Metronidazole powder....and you can treat a whole tank, and it wont affect breeding, nor fry....
but hubby will tend to isolate the affected fish in a small tank and crank the heat up a bit....this way you can use smaller dosages more effectively, espeicially if you have large tanks....and you can keep your eye on the fish....a few days time usually at most, the fish will begin to accept small bits of food offered sparingly....but the first few days we dont offer anything...
some people swear by using Clout....but its pretty harsh and normally its a do or die situation for the fish.....
