Does anyone here use an overflow box in their breeder tank?
And if so, what do you use to keep your fry or fingerlings from getting sucked into the overflow box?

When I first got my doviis, they'd often find themselves in there (it has a plastic mesh guard, but not enough to stop a fry from going into the tube)... Up until they were about 4 inches.
In fact I lost my first dovii in my overflow box, he fell in and I guess ultimately ran out of oxygen as he was pressed up against the meshing in there - from the force of water.

My overflow box has those guards - like I'm sure all do, that have the gaps between the squares like a castle (lol)

Anyway, does anyone have a creative way to keep the fry from being sucked in? Short of turning off the return pump?
All of my filtration is in my sump nearly.

I used Aquarium silicon and glued two pieces of a breeder net over the holes. The tank hold have to be empty or atleast the intake of the overflow is dry. My is a little different if a fish goes in the overflow it could live there for a while. I just found one of my blood fin tetras living in the return portion my sump. Its been there for close to a month.

Multiple stockings then. :P

Though I personally never tried it. I just turned the filter off until my cichlid fries grow big enough, then I turn it back on.

That would result in zero filtration and stagnant-like water.

I may try some sort of small net, I think a stocking would have holes that are too small and would clog fast from larger particles.

Hmm, well then :D
I guess it will be okay until I can net them out for my fry tank (which currently has an old last batch of convicts lol).

Use a old catching net and just siphon off the crud when you clean your tank. It works well with my small blood fin tetras prevents them from swimming in the filter.
