Thinking about yanking all my canisters off my 135 and running a sump. Bean style drains but I'll need to add an acrylic box to the inside of the tank, which is also acrylic.

Weld on 16? 40

What's your choice for acrylic to acrylic bonds?

Well, not really. I think I'm gonna drill the overflow holes side mounted as we have a dead space on one end anyways. Plus, this has to be silent as its in my studio... Traditional boxes will be a little too loud.

I believe weldon 4 is for bonding, my material quote for diy acrylic tank was almost as much as custom built so I abandoned research quickly.

I'm ordering a tank with external overflow for beananimal setup on a 72*30*24 and recently began to debate side vs rear but have know idea where I'd put my two returns, do you have a plan for your return?

I was thinking about running the returns on the opposite end of the tank. Build some kind of spraybar and have the tank run side to side river style.

Thinking about mounting the overflow externally as well to free up some space, but I need to the seal to solid if I do. Inside is not as big a deal because the water will still be "in" the tank. External could be a little trickier.

I would suggest #40 for an external box. The seams would look cleaner with #4, but #40 will provide a more durable bond over time. #16 shrinks while curing which creates bubbles so it's best for small repairs. Check out Wednesday's thread on #40 if you haven't already http://monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=544585

Btw, have you thought about how you're going to set the water level with an external box? I've been planning out a river style overflow too but my bigger fish could easily crack a bulkhead with nothing covering the strainer, so I'm thinking about using a thin internal weir instead of an elbow. If it wasn't built yet I would have the top notched out exactly like pacu mom's big tank

Cool info, thanks! Yeah setting the water level inside is gonna be a trick too. Been over on Reef central a bit studying and getting my head wrapped around it.

No, just wanting a quieter more efficient setup. A sump can move as much water as the canisters for about 100 watts less power, and adding another 50 gallons to the system.

Aesthetically it can be a much cleaner look too. Not necessary really, but a sump does have certain advantages.

Just picked up a 55 gallon complete setup for $60......so, i'll be running a 55 gallon sump. Already have the pump, bulkheads and socks, so I just need an overflow box and some weld on......and a decision on internal or external......
