Overflow box

Weldon #40 for the sure-fire bond of an external overflow.

If you have the room for external, go external. It will look a lot better outside and not taking up tank space, considering that you have the room and it won't look out of place. The only hard part would be how to open it op to the outside for water flow. Cutting slots would be a bit tricky.

Yeah, that's what I'm stuck on. Even the famous Bean himself went internal with a calflo.

Thanks for the info. Picking up the last parts this week.

Instead of the more traditional small slots in the top of the weir, my tank has fairly large openings.

Behind each opening is an acrylic framework to hold an eggcrate "screen"

The 1/2" grid is pretty big, though, and could allow a lot of debris into the overflow boxes. Instead of the eggcrate, a piece of acrylic that has slots could be used.

BTW the waves of Weldon is for the black lamination on the back of the tank and not the overflow box.

That's a good idea having the spot welded in to hold the screen. You could even put a custom slotted piece if you didn't want egg crate.

Internal would be easier as you would just have to drill holes for the bulkheads, but you lose tank space.

Slight change of plans.....going internal after all because of how I'm going to plumb this thing.....

Weld on 40 for internal too or something else? I've seen some guys on reef central use silicone but I didn't think it bonded well with acrylic....

Silicone will hold for an internal as long as there isn't and water pressure situations. It doesn't really have to hold a lot of weight.

Thats what I was wondering. The only external seal will be the bulkhead gasket really. The overflow would get pushed into place by the pressure on it if anything. And seeing as about 1000gph will be running through it it doesn't need to be water tight.

Silicone it is then...

I'd give it a shot. Sure beats the hell out of going for the permament option first.

There won't be any weight on it either. The bulkhead and stand will support the Bean drains, which will be plumbed out the side.....

This build is getting pretty ridiculous lol.... Gonna be different, that's for sure.....

I can't wait to get home to start.
