overflow boxes

Sorry for not being clearr but I'm just beginning my research. I was curious about the internal overflows. I was reading about the beananimal set-up and was wondering why I cant omit the box. Might not be feasible with that system but in regards to sump systems in general. A 3d bg is a necessity for me but if I have to allow 4" or whatever the box is plus the bg then a 180 wouldn't benefit me as a replacement for my 125 and a 225 wide would essentially be an overpriced 180. If I drilled the back or bottom with no box I can place the bg an inch or two of the back cutting wasted space in half

I run this in my tank and have had no issues, not one at all and that is with power outages.

Op never stated hob overflow box, Why did we just assume this? I would never use a hob overflow however drilled tanks with standard overflows are almost flawless and not prone to failure.

Sorry. I did assume. But it was assumed due to the OP stating "Water goes over the top" in his first post. HOB overflow boxes go over the top others like drilled set ups with "in tank" overflows are through the back/side/etc and are flawless.

Yeah you don't really need a box at all. As long as the standpipe is at the height you want/need.

The main point of the coast-to-coast skimmer box/weir in a beananimal setup is to provide efficient surface skimming. This style of overflow was designed for reef tanks where surface skimming is very important. Surface skimming is also beneficial in a FW setup because most of the waste collects at the surface, but it's less critical than in a reef.

Reducing the amount of water that will drain to your sump in the event of a power outage is a seconday benefit, but this should not be an issue as long as your sump is adequately sized to contain the volume.
