I just set up my sump and to say the least its not going all that well. The box is working fine but I think my pump is pumping more water into the tank than the overflow box is putting into the sump. The box is rated for 1200 gph and the pump (mag 12) is rated to the same at 0 head. So im kinda stumped as what to do

Also do all overflow boxes make so much friggn noise? it sounds like niagra falls allbeit more gurgley.

any help/tips/sudgestions will be grately apresheated.

thanks in advance.

could be wrong, but the flow of water into the sump is determined by the speed of water being pumped out, so long as your tubing is of a wide enough diameter...
if there is air in the sump thats causing a gurgling noise, then your arent getting the full gph capacity...its probably an error in the startup, specifically the priming, of the sump.
try allowing the sump to fill more completely before turning on the powerhead...
also some power heads are inherently really loud.. which kind of powerhead do you have?
i hope this helps...

Well yes and no i think. the box is pumping water into the sump at a good rate but the mag 12 is pumping slightly more. causeing the water level in the sump to go down. I cant fill the sump up any more becuse if the power goes out the sump will overflow.... the sump and pump are very quite its the box thats noisey it sounds like its haveing seasures......this whole sump thing is getting on my nerves.... and ears....

tank size/ sump size?
overflow brand?

did you check for cavitation in the U tube of the overflow box?

tank 265 gal

sump 36l 12w 14h
idk I got it for $30 off ebay:wall:

?Cav what? there's 2 tubes ill post pic of the whole deal tomorrow

Cavitation is the formation of vapour bubbles of a flowing liquid in a region where the pressure of the liquid falls below its vapor pressure.
Cavitation is usually divided into two classes of behavior: inertial (or transient) cavitation, and noninertial cavitation.

Neither of which has anything to do with a siphon.
You never mentioned your HOB overflow style.
They are either the Continuous siphon overflow or Eshopps.
Flow rates have a ton of things that can affect them.
First being an exaggeration of the actual flow from your overflow.
Sellers often up the realistic flow rates to make a sale, not all, but quite a few.
For your “balance” problem, most will simply install a valve in the return line, restricting it`s flow.
Others will “T” into the pump return line and divert any excess flow back into the sump through the use of a valve.
For the noise issue, you’re on your own. There are a huge number of posts devoted to making these things quieter.
Good Luck
