Overflow location pros and cons

i always have my overflow on the far right or left side of the tank and have the returns on the opposite side just so the whole tank is getting cycled through the sump

I do this as well. Seems to work well, and I have a powerhead at the bottom of the tank moving water in the same direction so that the entire water column is moving one direction (to the sump). Also simulates moving water as in a river quite well.

And to hide the hideous overflow.....DIY background:

Ugg!!!... a bottom drain with no standpipe for setting the water level and cutting off the flow during a power outage? :WHOA: I would not do this or recommend this!!!!

I am getting close to finishing my stand. When I move my glass 110g to the new stand I plan to drill the tank. I am thinking of drilling it about 2 inches down from the top and 2 inches in from the right hand side. I chose two inches because I figure this is the minimal distance from the edge I could use without weakening the glass too much. I then plan on making the overflow along the entire top right hand side with the weir set at a level to keep the water line above the top plastic tank frame.

I am pretty confident this is how I will configure the overflow but I am still open to changes.

I plan on running at least one bottom sucking canister filter in addition to the new sump. I am planning on the intake to the canister being on the lower left side of the tank. With the spray bars on the upper left side of the tank to create the circular flow others have mentioned.
