overflow making noise

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am going to add bio balls to the overflow and try out the durso stand pipes.

Dsanyal what do you mean by a U tube in the sump?

Thanks for the feedback.

I would just go with the Durso pipe I did the about a week ago and it works wonderfuly! And reduced the sound of the overflow by 95%.

i mean use (2) 90* elbows to make a U shaped bend in the sump, i tried 2 different overflow and even use a durso standpipe in an effort to reduce the waterfall like roar in my sump and was getting no where(well, the durso did cut out the gurgling toilet drain sound) but i added in a U bend and even when i took the durso out i didn't get very much noise.

Well i added the durso stand pipe and i guess it was too high or the hole in the top wasnt big enough cause it still made a bunch of noise i guess i will mess with it more this weekend. Does any one know how big of a hole i need to drive in the top of the stand pipe? Thanks everyone for there input.

What size pipe?

I had a heck of a time trying to get a 1" durso to be quiet.
1-1/4 was a completely different story, not silent but significantly better.

Best I could do with a 1" pipe, was to put a ball value before the return enters the sump and throttle it back until the air intake matched flow. It actually flows faster (and near silent) when you find this happy medium.

Here are more details on what I did to get silence and surface skimming.

Danyal, do you have a sketch or a picture of the location of this U bend?

i don't know how to post pics and i don't have an imageshack or anything like that to post a link to. its it's incredibly simple, you put one 90* elbow on the end of the pipe that is dumping the water into the sump, then put another 90* elbow so the water is flowing upwards. it looks like
l <--- pipe into sump
l
l_ _l <--water exits here

I see what you are talking about now. It will slow the water down a little. I will try that when i get home tonight.
