window screen is too small and will clog causing a dry sump or overflow your tank. I use a laundry bag (the netting type) and cut sections out of it. when it gets nasty I throw it out and cut off a new piece.

If you use a screen you'll probably need to increase the diameter of the intake pipe. To make a screen, I would just drill a bunch of small holes in a small piece of 2" pvc pipe, and connect it to the 1" pipe with a coupler. You'll need to cut 1" overflow pipe to match the added length of the 2" coupler and intake screen.
