overflow shutting down

Thanks, sure. It's exactly like the MS Paint diagram a couple of posts higher up.

The sump is just a big gray plastic tub from Target with a smaller tub hanging inside it to hold media and such. A ton of threads in this section show different builds for that kind of sump, much better than I could.

EDIT: I never got around to trying it, but I was thinking that you could fit a large Tupperware tub around the output, box it in to contain the splashing, with a bulkhead at the bottom of the tub to run a hose to a covered sump. I liked the fountain effect from the water bubbling out of the shortened output, but it wouldn't work very well for a covered sump that takes hoses for its input (like the commercial acrylic sumps).

Interesting. So functionally it's pretty much the same as the standard overflow.

Like you suggested, the only real problem with it is that you can't put the sump underneath the tank.

Yup, it's the same thing as the stickies, with a few parts taken out. My place doesn't have room for big stands, so my tanks are all close to the floor, anyway, and that made it all work.

well thanks everyone. I tested the check valves by starting the overflow and sticking the hose in the water to see if it pulled water up and it did. That was one of them, the other didnt pull the water. that one might have not been glued right from the start. As of right now it is up and running will post back with any more problems. And thanks for all the help.
