overflows way too loud

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Are you using 1 overflow or 2? Mine was waaay loud, once I setup the 2nd overflow, taking half the flow, they both became alot quiter than just the 1 working.

Is the bottom of your stand enclosed holding your sump etc?

I used pipe wrap on some of my plumbing too, it helped quiet it down a bit, but I also used it because my house get's colder than the tank in the winter.

I also capped my vent pipe and drilled a hole, but I installed a piece of airline hose into the hole, with the hose running down and inside the stand. The stand gets closed and you don't hear it. I still did hear it breathing before I did this.

turn a fan on when you sleep, "white noise" it works great.

That should let you avoid losing your balls for another week or two until you can get the overflow figured out.

Is it the overflow, or air mixing with water while it flows down to the sump?

i am guessing you have a surface skimming PVC over flow?

If so rebuild it and go with a bottom syphon style. They are 25x times quiter but they only flow about half of what the same size surface fed overflow does.

So you need bigger pipeing or more overflows.

I keep hearing about this. Got a diagram?

If you have a bioball or something similar, try putting it on(not in)the intake tubing of the overflow box, help me control the noise ALOT

I have screen over the pipe in the water so it'd be hard to put a bioball on it. I already have a cap with a whole in it which stopped the gurgling. I have a long hose that is connected to the check valve. I'll stick that into the cap. It seems like it makes noise when it starts sucking air. It stops for a few seconds and then starts again. It last awhile and then stops. I finished the stand so it's covered and I have a cover on the sump. All you can hear from the sump is a little running water which is actually relaxing. Would the overflow I posted in the leak still be "noisy" I don't mind spending the extra cash if it'll be quiet.

I think he means a durso standpipe type overflow. http://www.dursostandpipes.com/
I made one, it seems to work pretty good. A lot of air still goes in though.

i will wait for a response from him or one of the other guys ive heard talk about this "bottom siphon" overflow.
i have done durso style on a tank, but i dont think thats what theyre referring to. if i remember correctly, NC mentioned something about better mechanical filtration with a "bottom siphon" style overflow (i could be getting things mixed up here), so im imagining something that somehow pulls from the bottom. though im not sure how that works without creating a comtinuous siphon.
though i do agree, that going with this type of an overfow will make things on the intake side quieter. however if the problem is an open sump, or stand with no cover, it wont do much for the air mixing and "splashing" on the output end of the overflow.

I have a close stand and sump. That is not the problem. Couldn't a bottom siphon cause big problems if a pump was to go bad or power to go out?
