overflows way too loud

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
try these they work wonders!

but seriously, i had this problem as well. I fixed it by taking 8" of 1/2 tubing, gluing it to an acrylic piece with a 90 degree lip on it, and put the free end into the bulkhead pipe. this allows the air to vent out of the pipe and prevent gurgling. ill try to post a pic tmrw

My turn for my 2 Cents. Not sure what size tank you have but I had dual 1" over flows in my 55 gallon, from the DIY secton here. They where loud and drove me insane. I got them to be totally silent you can see it here

As you can see and here there is no noise but lots of current.

I put a ball valve on the drain and a T on the intake. Now the to allowed for the intake to pull from under the water so no air was sucked in, but didn't reduce flow because the top was still surface skiming. The ball valve was on the drain so I could restrict the flow slightly to make it completely silent. With out the ristriction it still produced some noise, but any time you restrict the drain there is always a risk of flood. However this is reduced since there where 2 drains and each drain had a T, if the intake was blocked the water would rise to the top of the T and start draining again.

i will wait for a response from him or one of the other guys ive heard talk about this "bottom siphon" overflow.
i have done durso style on a tank, but i dont think thats what theyre referring to. if i remember correctly, NC mentioned something about better mechanical filtration with a "bottom siphon" style overflow (i could be getting things mixed up here), so im imagining something that somehow pulls from the bottom. though im not sure how that works without creating a comtinuous siphon.
though i do agree, that going with this type of an overfow will make things on the intake side quieter. however if the problem is an open sump, or stand with no cover, it wont do much for the air mixing and "splashing" on the output end of the overflow.

Post #2 is for the bottom siphon overflow. Actually, they are a bit easier.

That does look a lot more a efficient for waste removal. Mine doesn't seem to do much when it comes to waste removal.
