Overkill - Too much filtration?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm actually running the hammerhead gold on a 300 gallon filled with driftwood and large loaches and other current loving fish and it works out alright but its still very strong...way too strong for most fish without heavy cover to hide in. It has has a 150 gallon sump The biggest issue would if your overflows can handle the water flow. I know mine BARELY can and I have 3 good sized overflows on the tank. If it is too strong then the water will literally flow over the top of the overflows instead of through the "teeth". I'm going to be breaking down the tanks soon and using the pump on a 1200 gallon indoor pond which it is more suited for.

In this case I wouldn't do it. Shoot for something in the 2000 gph max range and you'll have plenty of water movement. I love the concept of overfiltration as much as the next guy but these hammerhead pumps are a little extreme for anything less than 500 gph imo.

The question of "too much filtration" really depends what the pump is pumping water through. The head height and plumbing diameter will help determine it, but going by the video pacu_mom posted it certainly looks like it would be too much flow (which is different to too much filtration).
I agree. Overfiltration would be the 40 gallon sump plus six FX-5s. 4000 - 5000 gph is too much through a 40 gallon sump and is too much for many fish
