Hey guys, wanted to ask a question bout my silver arow. I've had him for a couple of months and watched him grow from about 5 to 8 inches. He's very healthy, and eats anything I put in the tank. Pellets, flake, seriously anything. Only thing is he is SUPER agressive, not to the other fish in the tank but to me. If I stick a finger in to check the temp he'll bite me pretty hard(you know to make sure the heater is working), if I stick my hand in for a water change he'll try to bite me and circle around my hand like a shark. He also randomly attacks the top of the water and makes loud splashes. One time I opened the lid for a second as I was about to feed as I put my hand over the water and he jumped out of the tank trying to get my hand and fell onto the floor.
Any reason he's like this or anyway to change him? I mean I'd prefer not having a fish that wants to bite me at all times and it really sucks to do a water change. Its amazing how he gets along fine with my other fish and when feeding time comes he's ok with everyone.

Thanks in advance.

sorry that i dont have any advice on this but i would love to see a video!
i have heard that feeders increase aggression but thats about all i know

I have seen this behaviour in Silvers and Asian Aros. No advice to give on it, sorry...

I've got just what you need! :D

honestly
that sounds like an awesome arowana. Virile, aggressive, nasty and fast!
you dont want a slow as$ chump!
just dont put tank mates or trial and error tank mates lol
my jardinii was agro but not to my hand.

sounds like your arowana has some chromosomes missing ! awesome!

honestly, instead of putting your hand for a water change, just stick a tube in, shypon water and refil, dont bother cleanin the gravel too much, if you have good filtration, it should be ok anyways, and water flow then the gravel should not get stagnant. or remove the gravel totally or put a very very thin layer, this way, you dont have to disturb him and he can be an agro aro, and everyone is happy!

when hes 12 to 14 inches, you should put a rabbit in there.:D

Mine doesn't bother me when I do water changes but when I go to feed him hes alot like that splashes around and has hit my hand. Even slashing water on me and the floor. Mine is about 13 inches right now. I'm glad he doesn't bother me during water changes though I can tell hes thought about it circling close to my hand. I guess what my advice is...get used to it not alot you can, its part of owning a arowana. After all in the wild they do hunt and feed on the surface and sometimes above the surface. Oh and I have never feed him live food except when I first got him I was feeding him live crickets because its what the LFS was feeding him. But i quickly switched to bloodworms, silverslides and freeze dried krill

he recognizes you as the food source. that is good........the bad is that he thinks you might be a food source.

try to retrain him to wait until the food splashes the water.

my aro of similar size got me tonight for the first time, little bustard.

Interesting behavior. I want one... though the risk of the fella jumping out of the tank is too great imo lol

I am grateful now that my silvers do not swim away when i open the lid but actually start to circle in wait for food (and eat it when it hits water) - that is awesome - a bit more punch would be nice....though my tank is a comm tank so an overly agro tank mate is not that desirable.

I woulda enjoyed raising this hell-raiser aro of yours by himself only. My aros DO NOT respond to finger wiggling like aros in the LFS and in my friend's houses... may be i am feeding them too much or over-indulging- spoilt brats
