It's normal in both of my tanks. The catfish (to include the plecos) all tend to do that. I have a Syndontis in my 37g that looooves to sleep upside down. Same as my 6" clown loach. They all sleep nestled in bottom right of the driftwood. It's funny actually. Like I said, just don't be surprised. They're perfectly fine.

Definitely NO on the oscar. Too big and way too aggressive. I'd definitely just wait until you get the bigger tank too.

As far as them being sensitive, I've never had any health problems with either of my clowns. I've had a good bit of luck with these guys. Never got sick even if the other community fish did. I've been told that German blue rams are difficult to keep too, but once again, no problem here. I guess it all comes down to how your water parameters are and how much/frequent you do water changes. I do around 30-40% WC weekly in most cases.

NixMix what is the size of the tank where your two loaches are housed?

The two clown loaches are in a 37g. The bigger one is definitely the bully of the two. If I drop in some zucchini, he plants himself right on top of it and just eats away while the other fish just stare on hoping for some to float to them. lol

I had a 2 inch jack dempsey in a 55 gallon tank, and he ballooned to outgrow that tank in less than 6 months! He went from 2" to 10".

As far as keeping clown loaches, everywhere i have seen posted, it's a 55 gallon minimum. I have a 110 gallon tank with at least 50 small 2-3" clown loaches, and 1 large 6" clown... They are slow growers.. Don't let anyone talk to down to thinking they will grow a foot in less than a year because that's simply not true. I have a plastic root in the corner of my tank that they ALL huddle into together, and the only time I see them is at night, or in the morning when it's feeding time. They are so cute!

I also have zebra loaches.. I think I have 3 of them. I do find them fighting every now and then, but other than that they are great. They would definitely suit your tank best.

For your tank.. get rid of the Jack and get some Gouramis or something...

very good advices, im that type of person that likes personality in their fishes and gets very excited and cant wait for new fishes, heres a picture of the tank

so its alright if i add a couple of clown loaches for now in the tank?i know ill be needing some hiding spots and im trying to buy some terra cotta pots or some artificial/live wood to put in the tank,.i saw a couple good ones in the lfs but only live wood they had was mabinogi wood usually for reptiles i think,.are they safe to use in aquariums??
for the jack dempsey and oscar fish(that im planning to get) once they grow bigger ill add them into my arrowana tank,my jack was with my arrowana for a while in that tank and is really shy thats why i wanted to add some fishes but dont mind the arrowana hes in a much bigger tank now,.
the jack just hides all day only comming out when its feeding time, and i cant really add the jd into my arrowana tank now cause of the 12in tinfoil barb i have that might eat the lil guy,

Honestly, if we knew for sure that you were going to get a bigger tank, then you getting clown loaches wouldn't be an issue.. but we don't know that you are actually going to...

IMO- If it was me, I would get the CL's- but then again, I also know that I have bigger tanks set up for them already. CL's again are slow growers... but you should keep a larger amount of CL's and you simply don't have the room.

SO I would hold off, and just wait. Remove the hiding spot for the Jack, and get him a terra cotta pot.. he won't hide as much.

In the mean time, just keep what you got, and enjoy!

I agree with aclockwork with most of what he said HOWEVER if you are going to get a new tank in 3-4 months then I would wait to get the loaches if you intend to move them to the larger tank. They take a while to get comfortable so in 3 months just as they were settled in you woudl move them to another tank making them shy again. So just wait till you get the new tank.

Part of the shyness is a new tank, but also part of it is the new social structure they have to establish when you take 6 clown loaches out of a group of 30+.
Also, the few months before moving them to the new tank allows you to observe for any diseases and will be cheaper to treat, and you'll know you have healthy loaches before they go in your big new tank in a few months. Watch for ick, because they get it a lot. Other very common problems are velvet and internal parasites.
