Overstocked 180

May i ask how much you dished out for those micropthalmus? I know i paid a pretty penny for my 1"ers. So i can imagine what 6-7" go for, unless you got one hell of a deal.

I don't mind you asking at all. I dident pay for them. A friend of mine got 6 to get a pair. As soon as he had a pair and he had a fry that were free swimming he called me up and asked me if I could help catch out half the fry from the micros, strip some female malawis, and help catch and move a few things around in his tanks. When we were all finished he gave me his unpaired micros, and a mature pair of F1 affinis. I would do the same for him, if I buy several fish to get a pair. I have no problem taking the unpaired fish to him so he can give them a shot or sell them in his shop.

Well, that's a very nice deal. I'm looking forward to getting a spawning pair of my micropthalmus. Since you have them currently in the 180, hows their aggression been with the other inhabitants.

I'm sorry, I don't think I can give accurate info on that. The reasons are I have only had the fish for a week, and in this tank it is to hard for anything to be aggresive. There are just so many fish in there, I wouldent be able to tell you how they would do under normal conditions with only 5 or 6 total fish in the tank. But I will say the only thing I have seen them chase is eachother, but who knows. Sorry I couldent be more help. When I know more I will let you know.

Now that I have had these micros for a little longer. I would like to say they are nasty, mean, and brutish. They have my lyonsi up in the corner of the tank. They aren't showing signs of spawning, they are just outright mean. The big one has claimed approx 1/3 of the tank and only let's my little seiboldii in and my meeki pair are constantly trying to spar with the big one. The smaller two aren't nearly as mean, but do some chasing. I hope this helps, for those who questioned. I now really need to get my 125 set up for these guys so I can get them into there own tank.

Also the aggresion towards eachother has mellowed out drasticlly.

LOL...Tell us how you really feel. I've heard of them being pretty nasty towards each. I figured since yours were of a pretty good size you'd be able confirm or deny. My guys are a little too small to really show any real aggression towards one another so i'd have to wait and see. Thanks for the update though

No problem, I was shocked that the aggresion between the micros pretty much went away. I heard that conspecific aggresion is pretty high in these guys. But its not now. Now they just chase, no fighting yet, my argentea, lyonsi, and meeki. It has only been 2 weeks, so I hope they are still establishing pecking order. And hopefully the aggresion will die down a little. If not I'm going to have to nix the 3D background I'm holding out on for my 125 and just set it up and put them in. And I don't want to do that. So we will see time will tell and if you have any questions about what's going on and you don't see an update, just shoot me a pm. But I'm pretty sure I am going to do an update on them in a few weeks. Good luck with yours, they are very nice looking fish.
