i have a 55 ,,,, with 2 marineland dual bio wheel's and a fluval 405
it seem's excesive but it's ok

as of now there is a red devil and a jag, theye are both about 3",

i do realize i will have to give up one of them, most likley the jag,
so with my understanging of this,

we can save the tank to small converstaion for another thread,
I have been reading the madness on this forum,

what i am asking is how long do you think i can maintain the pair with my size and filtration?

i know sexuall maturity!!!! whatever, i am asking for a timeline people, not copy and paste mumbo jumbo

thanks

your tanks not over stocked at all they could live in there for a while even with other cichlids as far as bio load gos aggression would stop that from ever happening but your tanks not over stocked if you kept one of the it would be fine till it out grew the tank they both would need a larger tank a 75 would be the smallest for both and a 125 for a male jaguar cichlid but if you do good water changes then right now your pretty far from over stocked

sweet, cause i would love to see them both hit the 6" mark, before upgrading or giving up one of them

damn, two monthes is a shorter amount of time than i was thinking..

at 1" a month, thats oscar rate correct? wow i had no idea, i have heard the devils grow faster than the jag's, can anyone confirm this?

My little jag grew from 2 inches to 5.5 inches crazy fast and then really slowed down (as in barely growing at all). I had a juvie red devil once that grew a little slower than an oscar.

jags grow faster and larger then red devils but i'd say you have longer then two months i'd say upgrade the tank by the time the cichlids are 8''-10'' once they get past 10'' its a matter of ethics if you get the fish a bigger tank or not take out all the decor and you could keep a cichlid up to 12'' in there just don't put a fish in there thats longer then the tank is wide that wouldn't be humane even with no decorations a 12'' fish should only be in a 55 for a short time if at all

A Red Devil/Midas can easily attain a 1 inch p/month growth rate. Same with a Jag. The best time to remove them is when things get too hectic and or when they too large. IE 10 or so inches.

I would say red devils are one of the fastest growing cichlids. Jags and Oscars right up there with them. Keep them until aggression levels get to bad, could be 2 months could be 4.

Could be 1.

Just keep an eye on them, usually with just 2 cichlids its hard to raise them very well, one is always really dominant.
