Is your tank a 40 gallon breeder (3' x 18" footprint) size? Is so, it has a larger footprint than a standard 55 gallon (4' x 13").

yes my tanks footprint is 36" by 18". I actually found a 180 gallon with stand and i think the person i was talking to said hood and light all for $500. I think its a great deal but every time i go to get a cheap used tank it always has big cracks and chips in it so maybe this time different. If i get this tank what else could i do for C/A tank. Also can you guys give me ideas on some S/A's too.

I would recommend saving a bit more and go with a 75 gallon. From the front looks about the same as 55g but the extra depth is worth the money.

Yeah the 75 will open up lots of options for you. Could put two more SA/CA cichlids in there too. Salvini's ARE sweet, hope you got a female, they have better color IMO

I hope that 180 is in good shape! I have a 180 gallon, and it's a great size for a community of central american cichlids or a pair of large cichlids (Jag, Viejas,etc.) The 75 gallon is also a very practical size. You can put a pair of most cichlids in there, or house one larger cichlid.

I'd worry about overstocking more re: territory & behavior than actual overstocking (does that make sense?) I'd skip the 55, I've got one now and though the extra height is nice I like the depth that you get in the 40 (and the 75 if you decide to go that route). But think of the stuff you could keep in that 180...
