They say bull sharks have been caught all over the amazon river.

Could have been a small one I guess.

4 foot Aimara, 60 lb Dorado, or (most likely IMO) another BIG Armatus. I am NOT familiar with geography regarding these species so maybe location prohibits this, but I know any of the fish mentioned would be capable of that. Agreed, too big to be Piranha.

We all saw the show on discovery where the guy picked up the floating Armatus cause there was another Armatus stuck in it's mouth.....

Maybe not the Armatus, they seem to impale rather then cut clean.... Maybe the Dorado or Aimara would be the better candidate.....

No matter which way you look at it, that's friggin nuts.

when piranhas bite, they take several bites out of one area, makes it look like a larger fish did the damage.

at first glance looks like what a large channa micro could do but i dont think they inhabit those areas.

didn't think wolf fishes took out chunks. one may be but repeatedly?

several dorado, may be.

i still say it was the fisherman...

You seriously don't think a 60LB Dorado or a 4 foot Aimara could do that? I bet either could easily.

Wolves are definetly capable of taking chunks like that.... If I'm not mistaken someone's mentioned cases of humans losing limbs to them.

could have, Im no expert but will share my thoughts as to why i guessed what i did.

1st, a fish trapped on a hook and line is an akward thing. will make it easier to tear pieces off the trapped fish as the fish is being anchored into one direction.

i think if it was a 60lb dorado, only the head would be left. if may have been a few dorado but dorados dont take bites, they only tear off what can first wholly fit in their mouth which would either be the head/tail/midsection then tear that clean off. from top to bottom as opposed the damage seen which resemble more to bites.

a wolf may have bitten on, then twisted and tore a chunk off but then again, it wouldnt leave the clean looking bite marks, it would look torn off. and dont think the wolf would have struck several times this way. my wolf and ones i seen feeding on toutube usually strike, hold, and if needed, shift head towards gut then swallow.

looks like a group effort to me.

piyara pygo piranhas get to 20inches but not sure if they live in armatus waters. there are other serra piranhas that get large as well, but like i suggested earlier, smaller caribe/rbp/macs shoaling P's can and will make marks that look lie a larger fish made. I know cos I've fed large chunks of meat, large fish (dead) to my pygo shoal and the damage looked a lot like that.

take a closer look at the photo, its multiple bite markes, not a single.

^ Is that your final answer??? LOL

VERY true.... I think this round goes to Mad ness.

Very good, true, informative answer.

I got it,a pacu did it.Just kidding of course but I dont think that that is even an Armatus because it looks too silvery and the caudle peduncle is not brightly colored.I dont see how it had the strength in that condition to attack a fishing lure.
