Ozone in Freshwater Aquariums

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That sounds like a great way to shorten an animal's lifespan. Oxidation is one of the leading suspects for aging mechanisms. I would never knowingly cause oxidation in a tank. But I'm no chemist.

Fram what little I understand about it (which is a lot less than I've read about it) you are basically creating 'spare' oxygen atoms which will 'attach themselves' to anything and everything. It not only reduces nitrates but also ammonia and everything else. Maybe good for the lfs situation above but I read it will also 'kill' bacteria, viruses, algae etc etc, not sure if it would be that usefull in any but the largest or most overstocked tanks. Think I'll stick with WC's.

PS, know from experience working on photocopiers that it smells really weird as well

I'm pretty sure you don't put the Ozone directly into your tank, you have to have a separate container to hold the treated water until it is safe for aquarium use.

But they listed dosages that included fish death in the list in that link above.

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't use a system like the one in that link (especially since they even say that it is harmful if the fish hover over it :screwy:), but I think most Ozone systems are completely separate from the tank.

Ozone is an amazing thing to use but it is also well worth investing in an orp controller. I use this in my store with my saltwater and am doing scientific research for the next 5 months on a 650gal tank and an ozone reactor to see how the chemistry is effected by the ozone at Diffrent orp readings .
Also many large wholesalers and aquariums use ozone in their habitats and keep the fish alive for many years longer then expected
