Ozone reactor advice

Kevin,

Thanks for all your insight. I will hold on ozone when setting up my tank.

I think I will still use a UV but maybe if I use one that is rated for a smaller tank instead of 120g it won't decimate my pod population? (maybe like one of those cheap HOB UV's that are decent in getting the job done, that way if it does more harm than good it's not a huge waste of money, and if its good I can then decide to get a still smaller size but more efficient one)

Also, would UV still kill my pods as much if I have it in a skimmer loop?

As of now (in my head) my filter set up would be overflow into a sump/refugium (possibly an ADHI 90) with an in sump skimmer (model tbd) with a smaller uv (possibly with loop in the skimmer) as well as my two fluval cannisters (with surface skimmers).

I have no idea where to include these fluvals should go, but i do want to use them, even for just a bit of extra water flow and volume. Any thoughts on placement and media of my 2 fluval 305s?

Thanks for all the information and sorry for the long response with more questions.

Haha, your responce isnt nearly the same length as mine so dont worry haha, that and the only way you can learn is to read and ask questions so no harm in that. For one when I was new I though O3 was the way to go, but did alot of reading on it and talked to some people and decided its not for me.

Well a UV wont decimate your pod population per-say, unless you have one rated for a huge tank, many pods will likely survive going through, and many wont, a smaller one would likely kill less, as it means less exposure to the UV, but at the same time then it wont be as effective at killing parasites, and it will likely still do alot of damage to phytoplancton (which is so easy to culture its not really a big deal to dose). But, eather way a UV wont exterminate your pods, it just mite stop them from booming population wise, and you may have to resead, it really depends sometimes pods die out from other things, its hard to be perfect.

In the skimmer loop, it would likely kill less as its not direct form tank or to tank, (that and the skimmer will likely kill some of your pods any way), though I'm not sure how its preformace will be affected, as the skimmer could be skimming stuff the UV would kill (possible, all skimmers are different). Since I don't use skimmers you would better to ask someone else about setting up the UV in its loop.

The 305s are external are they not? You can pretty much do whatever you want with them if they are, where ever you have space. Media, there are a number of options, Activated carbon is commonly used, I use it on and off, and the other could hold some sort of bio media, like a floss, or some of those "bead" type media for bio, I guess it depends if you want chemical removal, or addition biofiltration. There are other medias you could use but they are mostly unessisary in the average stocked system. I would say carbon in one and bio-media of some sort in the other, or bio-media in both.
