Is the sex of this 'monarch' freddy (~5") obvious from its coloration? I requested a female, but the spots on the flanks and fins make me think it's male. Are the spots a give away, or do females also show them as well? Either way, it's a nice addition to the tank. It would be nice to know the sex though.

male because I can see the male tube

I want a nice female yj fred too. One of these days. I last seen an adult group in 2005. In VA at Animal Jungle on Holland rd.

That is a beautiful fish

Yeah, I just wanted confirmation. It's a nice fish, but I'm frustrated with the supplier. In June I ordered a female freddy from the same place and received a female loisellei instead (plus a male freddy I had no room for at the time, and some hybrid that was passed off as a synspilum). I decided to try them one more time. I received some very nice fish with the order, but still no female freddy. Oh well. Hopefully this male freddy will grow on me.

That does sound frustrating. He is really nice, and has a lot of potential.

Sucks you didn't get what you wanted, however what you did get is a very very nice looking fish!!!

a red tiger mota is nice too. But a female Freddy was the purpose he's after.

Send him tome I;ll trade you

That's alright, the male is doing well in my tank and seems to fit right in. Also, I have a group of small (3/4 - 1") 'la ceibas' in a grow out tank - I'm not sure how they'll compare to the 'monarch' variety, but hopefully there will be a good looking female in the mix.
