p14 not eating

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
my p14 from the same litter did act up for a week with out eatting bit i added 10% salt and after a couple of days was recovered.

Most fish, especially juvenile fish will act up when stressed out from a change in their environment. This is a given.

But why all the talk in this discussion about gill flukes?

Gill flukes multiply like rabbits, and it doesn't take long before they spread to every fish in a tank, it's not like only one or two fish become infected. Gill flukes are also one of the easiest parasites to spot in a fish, as once they begin burying into the tender part of the gill tissue most fish go hog wild, flashing & scratching non stop. Due to their reproductive cycle you typically need to perform two 7 day treatments , with a gap in between the two treatments, and salt does not eradicate gill flukes so in your case cheon there clearly weren't any gill flukes present in your fish.

Also, as every supplier knows, once a fish leaves their facility there's no telling what the hell is going on in the tanks those fish are ultimately being placed into. A young sensitive fish with a young underdeveloped immune system will usually be the first fish in the the tank to show problems, if/when any type of problem exists, be it water quality issues, or something more serious. Simply adding a new fish from the LFS to a system can create havoc if that new fish is packing heat. The bacteria and/or parasites from a single fish can linger in a system for weeks, only later surfacing when opportunity knocks.

I'm not trying to nit pick here, I just found it rather odd that someone in this discussion was pointing fingers at the supplier, when in this situation it seems to be a pretty clear case of operator error. That error has been corrected, and now all one can do is hope that the damage wasn't permanent.

thanks cheon, it happens i guess! sucks though most black rays when and if anything goes wrong im confident i will fix it!! im already assuming these guys are done! they deteriorate quick

they take forever to deteriorate.isolate them and feed them lots of live stuff.ohh try snails i did this and it worked well.snails maybe not the safest bet but they will get eaten quickly.petsmart gave me as many as i wanted for free.i put a few hundred in with two rays that didnt eat and they both began eating

I would agree with RD here that gill flukes is not an issue due to a few reasons. Knowing where the captive bred rays came from and then being in Bretts tanks when landed. Also gill flukes would not have taken over this quick due to stress. The issue here was the ph crash would most likely be due to a high ammonia level which caused most of the problems. Linc would not have these issues as I would assume he has very soft water so a little ph bounce would be normal. For our hard water to crash requires some bad water conditions to happen either by a high ammonia or along time inbetween water changes which both issues could have been the problem here. With the p14's being smaller there could have been some permenant damage done or they just aren't big or tough enough yet to have the proper time to recover. Hope it all works out for you Glen. I've forgot things along the way also and we are all human, hopefully it's only a small reminder.

i dunno i havent seen an ammonia spike during the time everything happened and my drip was only off for about 1.5-2 days. just wanted to know a reason so it doesnt happen again.

well one died this afternoon so yah they do deteriorate way quicker then p12s and p13s. they stopped eating about 10 days ago! well ill hope for the best thanks matt

i have a bd right now thats been alive for 7 weeks and hasnt ate since week one.6 weeks still alive without food so i guess it depends on what ever variable(s) is causeing issues.something is for sure wrong.captive bred rays rarely ever die.
good luck

my ray is doing the exact same thing.except i brought him in a couple weeks before and its still alive.his ate than stoped eating just like mine and cheons did also..its our water in calgary.the ph changes alot and he also crashed his tank. and i dont think its just the ph thats bugging his rays. my ray wont even show interest in food its been 6 weeks like this now still alive but paper thin :(

It's our water .test the hardness it's off the chart hard.rays acclimate but some just won't agree.the come from acidic very soft low mineral content water.our water is extremely different.i told cheon this too when he prazied his p14 that he didn't need to .It's 100% the water I'n your tanks glen.hook up your ro unit and mix 60-40
