How big are they now?aquanaut;768473; said:Doubt if they get 3 ft. In all the reading 2 ft was mentioned as a possibility IN THE WILD.

peanut....im prob. gonna regret this but i disagree! i think it is the same pike i just got! i think its a frenata. he said it was labled jewel pike. my last order i did at my store i ordered "jewel pikes". i only say i disagree cause mine looks exactly the same and the people who distribute to the wholesaler give them "common names" which the wholesaler (which i found another with the same pike labled the same thing) use on the avail. list for an unsuspecting store like mine to say ohhhh sounds pretty and not care about the true origin of the fish.Peanut_Power;768970; said:Where were you reading that at? That guy at the LFS is giving you a bunch of crock. It does agitate me when people feed other people information in the hopes of makin a sale when they know practically nothing about the fish...rrg.
Lugubris pikes are among the largest growing of the pike cichlids...with the LARGEST ones reachin 24"...although completely mature pikes of this size have yet to be seen in captivity. Crenicichla cincta and Crenicichla sp. 'venezuela' are a few of the ones that are able to reach these sizes. I have never even heard of a 3' pike...the thought alone of one gettin that big is humbling...talk about a wicked fish.
The pike you have is a type of Saxatilis pike. They normally max out between 8 to 12"...rarely exceeding that. It may be possible for them to reach 14"...but that is mainly for the larger species within the group. They are great fish, get really thick for their sizes. GENERALLY not as aggressive as the Lugubris pikes...but still able to kick some tooshies.
My guess would be Crenicichla lepodita....amazingly beautiful pikes once mature. I really am not the best at IDing Saxatilis pikes though, so I would get a couple more suggestions...haha. Its definately not going to get three feet though.![]()
