ok my pacu has color changes and recently he has been black. is this a normal color? my second pacu is light grey and that is why i started wondering what was up with the colors. is he unhappy? is he happy, he's eating and swimming, but is getting picked on.

yup, stress contributes to the changes in colors of fish.

It does that is true-
But many other factors will also play a roll into it.

But since it is getting picked on-it would most likely be that..

My Pacu happens to be quite unique in it's coloration....Alot is that diet it gets fed.

I have two in my pond. The smaller one is darker. I know that's not how he always is, because I rescued him from a lady who had him a 55, and he was really light silver. I'm guessing that it's not just "aggression," but is also related to a sort of pecking order -- there's no aggression between my two, but the smaller one is always the darker of the two.

he's pitch black, and i have no other way to split them up but to get rid of one. but again in wyoming not many people have a tank big enough to house him, im not really fit to house them at there size, but im 15 and surprised that i have done as much as i have

its been my experience, as was stated, red belly pacu seem to turn black when being stressed. be it another tank mate, sickness, or water quality.

the color range of their silver/gray and their reds ive seen change here or there for no apparent reason. but going pitch black, if it is a red belly, is a sign of stress.

one idea would be get some real large terra cotta flower pots if you can fit them in your tank, and try to give the pacu a chance to hide a bit. if he's getting picked on that badly, your going to have to try and find another tank or home for it. eventually it will most likely lead to the fish's demise being stressed out 24/7

im non stop craiglisting for a larger tank and coming up empty as of now. but that doesn't mean that there wont be any when i can actually afford one.

if you honestly plan on keeping this guy for life, dont bother with buying a tank. its impossible to find many that would ever house a fully grown pacu

your best bet, start convincing mom and dad to let you put a small kiddie pool in the basement, that you can use as a fish pond. save up your cash, and for around $500 you could have a 1000g pond built, insulated, filtered and heated.

if your parents will let you of coarse, so just use the "hey, i could always spend my money on women, drugs and drinking like other kids my age do" excuse. lol
