This is for the people who have had them from small to monster. What is the normal growth rate? At what point do they slow down? I know they grow quick, but almost four inches in less than two months is crazy. I need a little more time to get a permanent home for him, but at this rate I'll need a time machine.

thats probably about right. they are like those pill caps that when you put them in water they turn into big sponges. its an instant monster.

Slowing down after the 20 inch mark is not what I wanted to hear.

there is ways to slow it down. mine grew an easy 3 inch a month from about 6inch to 18-20.

I bought a 1.5" nine months ago and he's now a 10" maybe a bit more.

These are not the answers I am looking for. Note to self, must stop rescues, must stop rescues.

its not THAT fast but semi fast.. ive got 2 and they about 6 inches.. my one before that was 23 inchs and he then was slow at growing...
Well ive had three that grow to around 20in in two years in a 125 tank. Also my frist pacu lived for 18 year not lie his name was freddy

im presently getting read to move to nc and Im thinking of staritng a pond for the summer and seting up my 125 again in the summer Glad I found this site

with half way decent water quality and food, you can expect a pacu to reach around 16" in that first year. at 6-8" expect them to hit an alarmingly fast growth spurt. they will balloon up from that 6-8 to a whopping 16+ in just a month or two. you can LITERALLY see them grow from day to day. ive raised 5 pacu from the size of a quarter, and 1 from around 6" with 4 more growing out right now, so i speak from first hand experience.

besides their size, these guys will put down a TON of food. try looking to buy cichlid pellets in bulk to save money, and try feeding grapes and other veggies from the market for them.

try kensfish.com for good priced pellets. mine have been eating them for close to 2 years now i believe.
