Pacu is lethargic

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I know what I'm getting myself into. I'm fully aware the size the can reach.
And what tank do you have ready?

EDIT: you should already have the aquarium, because the fish will outgrow the tank by the time you get it cycled and everything

I have 2 yellow belly turtles. By the time the red tail catfish needs a pond so will the turtles. When the catfish is 3 inches I'll put him in my turtles 55 gallon, and when he out grows that I'll get a 500 gal pond for him then a permanent home.

I am going to let others tell you what to do. You’re playing a dangerous game

I don't have much time to answer thoroughly right now but wanted to start by saying that at the face value, TylerFish has an earnest plan on paper. Plus he is not asking about the tank size. Please consider helping him with the health / appetite issue and let the tank size and fish sizes alone.

We need all the usual water parameters to start helping you, Tyler. If you don't know which, I'll be happy to list them. Tlindsey already started listing.

Pacu are a fish of steel but at 1" any fish is pretty sensitive and touchy.

I'd guess either you got it sick or it was attacked (and you didn't see it or missed the physical damage) or your water is inhospitable.

In any case, troubleshooting is advised but if you are experienced as you say you are, you know all this anyway.

Please do not get another pacu until you read up on quarantining new fish and the Nitrogen Cycle. The frequency and percentage of water changes should be based on keeping the nitrate levels to a predetermined low level. Pacu are especially sensitive to nitrogen products. Keeping nitrates low is important for them. You will need to house a full grown pacu in at least 1,000 gallons of water or it will become very difficult to keep the nitrates low. A healthy pacu can get up to 18 inches in his first year, so appropriate sized housing should be planned before you get a pacu.
