As MTBjake said they are Characiformes and this should have been posted in the Characin section. Just ask a moderator and they'll move it for you. It was also said that a 200 gallon is too small a tank for a Pacu and that's absolutely correct I wouldn't even put one in a 300 gallon. In my opinion they're only really suitable as pond fish. Also can your Pacu even turn around in the tank your keeping him in? I'm not a big fanatic when it comes to tank sizes, but I definitely think you should look into re-homing him with someone who has the ability to keep him comfortably.

I watched a pacu take ahalf banana from a 100 yr old Amazon turtles mouth. A 1000 gal tank would really only be temporary.
Anything smaller is a bit cruel.

When my "Brutus" died he was 36" long and 20 pounds. Here's an old shot of him when he was much smaller. I did have a few photos of when I moved him out of the pond for maintenance. I had to use a laundry bag as I had no net large enough. Can't lay my hands on the photos right now.

He lived in a 1600 gallon pond. My opinion...this is a fish that should not be offered to the aquarium hobby. Very few have the ability to house these fish for life. When He died, I was both sad AND relieved. He used to eat a cup of pellets at one meal. I fed him an entire head of iceberg lettuce. He used to love unshelled peanuts and grapes. Awesome fish....for a public aquarium.

BTW...wrong forum. And I feel compelled to say this...the simple fact that you have this confused with a cichlid tells me you have done zero research on what the fish needs to both eat and live. Like most you will likely be getting rid of the fish when they get unmanageable...and trust me it will. A 200 gallon tank is not big enough by a long shot. I had to move mine from a 300 after he started cracking heaters and tank lids. Good luck.

It is not just the size of the tank but the shape of the tank. A large round watering tank is a possible choice
