Pacu question

Raw peanuts out of shell. I loved to watch mine turn them in their mouths over and over until it was gone. Fresh cherries with a slit or hole cut in them. My pacus ran from the cherries. As soon as I cut the slit, they waited 6 seconds and each one took one down under the driftwood. Of course the cherries were stripped in no time. Bananas were not a favorite. They ate soft pears too. Keep trying various fruits and vegetables.

I had 5 red-bellied pacus. Yes, five all at the same time. I bought them at quarter size and every week they doubled in size. My fish love raw peanuts out of the shell and loved raw cherries. Just drop the peanut in one at a time, only if the pacu is eating them. Also, my pacus charged at cherries I dropped in then ran from them. I cut a slit in the cherries, and 6 seconds later, the pacus snatched the cherries and stripped the flesh until only the seed was left. Take the pacu back or your troubles will soon begin. I loved my pacus but had to give them up to someone with the room. Just think, I thought I had bought spotted silver dollars. That is a piranha in the picture. See the sharp jagged teeth again pacus lower jaw teeth look like ours. I thought mine had ich. So I took it out to examine it because the "ich" was on the lip. I thought this was unusual so I soon realized it was not "ich" but a tooth. Remember, a pacu can still injure you with those teeth, even though mine did not. are you telling me to return my fish??

wow...those are some teeth on the young piranha....pacus love their veggies.. then add a little protein as they grow... mine loved sliced carrots..for chewing and vitamins.. yours is too small right now so stick with small hikari sinking pellets and algae wafers.. in a week or two..no punt intended... but he will grow super fast.. add other very small nibblets of veggies.. zuchinni is another favorite..and small pieces of carrots do not make the water messy

Yes, no worries.
Keep trying to feed various things, so he gets his vitamins,
whatever he eats. Eventually.
But for now your Pacu has a taste for the pleco tablets/algae wafers.
So he gets his vitamins anyway.
Mine (15"), also likes pleco tablets the most, but luckly he likes cracked hazelnuts too. I still cant get him to eat anything I offer.
Im trying banana now, and he seems to like it.
I freeze the slices (with peel), so he has something to chew.
Seems to work.

You could also try very ripe mango my black pacu go crazy for that.

ok...found some HBH african cichlid sinking mini pellet food and "HEY MIKEY...HE LIKES IT!" he grabs them off the bottom, grabs them as they sink, and some i guess take a min to break the surface tension of the water then fall....now he's a happy lil pacu...thanks all for the tips...now next would be suggestions to break his shyness as he hides while i feed him and comes out as soon as i walk away from the tank...

thats great pacu pete... don't worry about him being shy..once he gets a little bigger and gains confidence he will jump out at you and dance for you... and smile.. pacus have so much personality... they are number one in my book for fun...

Pacu are like garbage cans with gills. but stick to the suggestions that were posted to keep the pacu in optimum health. fruits, veggies, algae wafers, pelleted fish food, raw unsalted nuts, market shrimp, occasionally buy a cheap aquarium plant from the LFS for $2-3 and let the pacu get some fresh aquatic greens as well, snails......as you see, the list is quite long on what to feed a pacu. you will find many members who's pacu readily accept those foods plus alot more.

Pacu are social. A shy one might do better with another pacu.

How big of a tank do you have for this fella?

right now he's in a 35g with a 9" sailfin pleco...but he's goin in a 220g
