Pacu upset me.

How skittish are pacu? It would be sweet to see a group of a dozen in a monster set up.

Very. Moved mine out of a 120 at a foot because he would freak and slam into the end and you would hear the thud. Put him in an outdoor pond and the first act was to imitate a flying fish. Barely saved him from the dog.

Now think of size. A fish that can get to almost three feet, each. Still think a 1000 gallon is enough for a school?

A 3 foot fish that darts constantly at high speeds. The guy who suggested 1000 gallons also tried to say that 10,000 gallons is the minimum for ONE red tailed catfish on a different thread :D

I hate when that happens. I had what I thought was a blue oranda, but as he grew all the black faded to orange.
Not to hijack the thread but why is it that all dark goldfish turn to orange? The only ones that haven't lost their color are the white ones.

I guarantee 1000 gallon tank is no where near large enough for a school. But if you hit the powerball for mega millions. I'd build big.

Black moors will hold their black color for the most part.

Not all dark goldfish do. There are blues, blacks, and chocolates that will hold their color but the brassy, greenish brown color many goldfish have is a natural juvenile color. They change to the bright orange or yellow as they grow, just like fader FHs. My big oranda is a blue x chocolate supposedly and he's only gotten darker as he's grown.

PacuMom has 2 or 3 Pacu in what I think is a 2,000 gallon tank. Don't quote me, but at one point about 3 years ago she was working on a 15x4x4. I think that is probably at least what you want for 3. If people have full grown ones happily living in smaller tanks, maybe they can post.
