have they ever cut themselves on the fork?
Nope.

The only veggies I toss in whole are carrots. Smaller fruits like strawberries, cherries, blueberries and nuts also get tossed in whole. Everything else gets chopped up: apples, watermelon, cucumber, potatoes, lettuce etc...

What's the purpose of the fork?

Its two fold, its primary function is as a weight, holds stuff down. But you will notice that the fork is on a string that is tied to a nail dangling in front of the tank. That makes it a LOT easier to get the left over bits out of the tank. The tank is too deep for me to reach the bottom of, even while standing on a ladder.

I have a friend that comes over when ever I ask to retrieve things off the bottom for me as my other option is a snorkel. I need to get one of those old people "pick-er- up-er things", but until then I just call Bill.

I recently became the owner of a nice 2 ft pacu, jus wondering wat the best veggie/fruit is best for them but also does not make a huge mess in the tank when they chew it up?

They love to chew!!!

Whatever you do, don't give them unlimited (all they can eat) watermelon! I tried that once, and got an ammonia reading. :( I rarely give my pacu fruit and veggies, because of the mess factor. They are fed pellets, which they inhale, so there's no mess. Our pacu inhale (swallow) grapes whole, so grapes aren't messy. We sometimes entertain guests by throwing a whole carrot in the tank. That's not too messy. Potato slices make a huge mess in the tank.
