Although you can keep them alone, they work better with more than one or two. That is, of course, if you have a very large tank.
 
they are a schooling fish, just like the other fish their "cousins" of, pirhanna and tetra's also i believe.

my 2 swim in circles around each other during feeding time and eat together, and are pretty much together 24/7 with my oscar. they did the same thing when i had 4 in my 250 at once also
 
Mine school and are good with fish that aren't mouth sized.
 
they like to be together... and they love to dance... so let the splashing begin..
