Pacus care??help please

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
alrighty then thanks anyway guess ill be saving for a little longer i wouldn't want to buy irresponsibly and not be able to take care of it

I'm glad you're a responsible fishkeeper. I agree with the others--400 gallons is too small to properly house pacu for life. Pacus can live 30+ years in a good environment. That's a very long commitment to a fish. If a person is going to "do the right thing", they will find it very difficult to find their beloved pacu another home when they can no longer take care of it. Silver dollars would probably be perfect for you if you want the pacu look.

To thrive, pacu need good water parameters, i.e., nitrates 20 ppm or less. With poor water conditions, pacu live about 2 years. The bigger the fish, the harder it is to maintain excellent parameters in a small tank. It is possible, but it is not easy. It can also be very difficult to upgrade to a bigger system. We have been trying to upgrade for over 3 years.

Here are our poor pacu in their pathetically small 300 gallon tank. They don't have much water to swim in.

We are in year three building an addition to house their new tank. An impulsive, spur of the moment yard sale purchase (a 55 gallon tank with two pacu, four oscars and two pleco) has resulted in a life altering, very very expensive experience.

Oh man thanks for the advice guys... Like stated before ill probably stick to a few aros or maybe different types ofcichlidsidk but thanks again just looking and planning for the future

Widebar and thinbar silver dollars would also be good alternatives to a pacu.

The above posters are correct, a 400 gallon tank is way too small for a grown pacu. A grown pacu can hit 50 pounds and 3' long, if not bigger.

On the other had though, with a 400 gallon you could have one or more adult arowanas.

+1. Silver Dollars.

Having once owned a pacu for over 7 years, I feel no one should keep them in aquariums. It is very hard to give away a large pacu. Mine was about 3" when I bought him with 3 silver dollars. He was a little over 27" when I gave him away (one of my happiest fishkeeping days). At that time the silver dollars were 6"+. It took me a little over 2 years to re-home the pacu.
