PADDLE FISH AND STURGEONS

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My bf just got me a baby sturgeon.... The guy who sold it to him said that they would be fine with my geos and syno even tho they are tropical fish. Trying to find info on keeping them in the home aquarium but not much luck. Any advice?

Sturgeon likes cold water, so don't use heater in the tank. A decent filter would do fine. Sturgeon likes to swim freely. They need large swimming space. A decorated tank would not recommanded. They can get stuck from rocks or wood. Look out for any objects that they might trap themselves and die (sturgeons aren't too smart sometimes). Tank must always be closed, and remember to cover all gaps or they will jump out. Good luck!

Wow, never knew you could keep Paddle Fish in a aquarium... don't they get to over 1M long? Or is that the sturgeon that gets over 1M long?

 you sir have two of my all time favorite fish. my lfs has some black sturgeon vary by season its a shame they get too big for my current tank. awesome fish!

How cold? Will room temperature be fine? I have the heater on my geo tank off right now and hes in there with them, but its still probably 78 degrees in there. There is plenty of space and the lid is nice and tight. Its not a very big sturgeon, only about 3" or so, how small of a tank can he be in for now? My bf was told he wont grow more than an inch or so every year, is this true? If he needs a plain, coldwater tank, I have a spare 10 I could use but I dont want him cramped. The other fish leave him alone for the most part.

I read somewhere that even the smallest Sturgon species the Shortnose I think needs at least 1500 gallons to grow to adulthood. I also saw a U-Tube video of paddelfish liveing comfortably in a 220,000 gal display. I'm no expert on either one of these fish but they don't appear to Ideal aquarium species. I think they are very cool but I don't have anything even remotly close (225 is my biggest) to what would be considered suitable. The Sturgon being a bottom dewling cold water fish might be able to live in a large pond, I don't know what you would do with a 5ft paddelfish that needs to swim constantly to filter feed and cover large areas of water.

What are the long term plans for these fish? I found this info that might be helpful to you.

You definitely can. Doesn't mean you should though. Multiple thousand gallon aquarium should be needed for these fish. Even the "dwarf" variety another user has should have a huge aquarium.

Its sad to think i've seen sturgeon being sold over here in HK... Since i doubt any one has a 200K gallon tank
