I think we all think they are endangered because the majority of us have never seen one in the wild...I know I havent and I go fishing all over WI (including the Mississippi). Dont know where they would be around here. Have you ever caught one JD? Lets see some pics!

Chris

The young paddlefish available where I lived before (WA state) were leftovers after the hatchery met their gov't fisheries and private pond stocking goals. These 'excess' juvies would otherwise be destroyed and sold as fertilizer additives.

so....are they endangered?
and why are they selling them and not releasing to the wild?

They are NOT an endangered species!!! If so how come statewide I can keep 2 paddle fish a day and in some lakes (Kentucky lake for example) I can keep up to 8 a day?! Also it is ILLEGAL to release a snagged paddle fish even if it was snagged unintentionally!

Oh and here are pics. Of one I caught a month or so ago. They are so common here you snag them with lures on accident while fishing for other fish! I catch them below the dam on the Ohio River right in front of the city of Louisville.

Yes, they are endangered in many areas. But, not all.

The excess can't be released to the wild because they exceed the gov't mandates on sustainable wild population numbers.

sorry oddball but i dont really know what that means?

like it is bad if the breed with wild fish or something?

it means if there are only the resources in the wild to sustain 50 paddlefish, they can't exceed that, as it for one has an adverse effect on the ecosystem, which is why you can only release a certain amount. It is the same with most animal species.
