Welcome to MFK!!!

If at all possible, keep the paddlefish in a round vessel. These fish just beat themselves to death in a rectangular tank. Curved walls help them 'ride out' a ramming.

Thanks for the tip. The one I ordered never came in, but I'm going to keep this in mind for next time I see one available.

u shld be careful......they are hard to mantain

Good luck bro, I had one about 6 years ago in a round plastic stock tank. I feed him frozen blood worms and live gambusia. I kept him till he was about a foot in length then I gave him back to the U.S. hatchery. My buddy works for them so once and a while he will get me a freshwater oddball. I had some leucistic green sunfish as well.

I never even thought of them requiring a round tank I bet they would be a real cool fish.

Keep the paddlefish in an unheated tank with lots of water movement and tons of aeration. They're filter-feeders but once they pass a foot in length, they'll have no problem taking down the occassional rosy red minnow or two. Mine fed on FD plankton/krill, frozen daphnia, flake food, bloodworms, etc. Basically, they'll eat anything suspended in the water column or on the surface. It took my 4 inchers only about a week to learn to roll over to get at floating food.
They're scaleless except for a few patches of dermal denticles. So, adding some salt to their water will help keep fungal infections down. I kept their water on the alkaline side and they were just fine with it.
This is a little off subject buy my 7-8 inch payara is doing that.. his bottom chin is so worn down u can almost see right into his mouth. whats up with that??
