There are two species of paddlefish: one is from Yangzi River and is the bigger of the two and the other is from North America.

The Chinese paddle fish is extinct, the three Gorges Damn pretty much sealed their fate but they were on a down hill slide anyway. The Chinese paddle fish wasn't a filter feeder like the American one is. They were piscavores and real predators.

They fed it brine shrimp and they went crazy just chomping away. They got a few other oddballs at a great price.

Lets be exact when we say cold water, Paddlefish do occur in areas where the summer water temps rise to the high 60's low 70's, technically this is not cold water. trout are cold water fish, a paddlefish would not spend it's life in a real cold water stream. That being said I wouldn't think a paddle fish would be comfortable in water much more than the mid 70's I'll consult my public aquarium friends to be sure but I think they keep them in water in the low to mid 70's.

These are North American Paddle Fish, so I think it would be safe for a heaterless aquarium. I hear they're plankton feeders and they look so fragile when I saw them at a lfs. Very cool looking though. I liked seeing them swim from a top view...they look so goofy, it's cute. Yes...I just used the word "cute"

Damn $70?! If I knew how and it were legal Id go to my local hatchery, pay $1.80 a piece and sell them for $65! lol
