Can someone school me on Paddlefish? I think by definition they are a gar. Availability, temperment, size? I can't seem to find much accurate info on them. The info is different from place to place.

try the other monster fish forum. they are definately NOT gar. good luck

they are not a gar. they are closest to a sturgeon, but not that close

basically they are a pain in the ### to keep in an aquarium (i've tried) and then if you do keep it alive, it will need a pond or lake because it'll get to 6ft long, easily

they are cool to watch, but not as cool as some other fish that are a lot easier to keep
trust me, dont get one!

MOON will jump in and help you out later, but i have to go to work right now or i'd give you all the info

As everyone has said not a gar, distantly related to sturgeon. They need very good biological filtration and lots of live food like Daphnia, baby brine shrimp and eventually tiny pellets. They need lots of swimming room. I would want to house one in a tank several times as wide and long as the fish is long. Water quality should be cool temps, neutral pH, and moderately hard. Lots of aeration is also required. They are a cool fish but it takes some real dedication to keep one and eventually it will get too big for any but the biggest of aquariums.

Definetly not gar. They are scaless and I think their bones are cartilage (I have a few paddlefish steaks at home from a 50lber I caught). Gar has a very hard shell like skinn with teeth.

Hey dude, steaks? Cool, are they as good as sturgeon? I've always wanted to try paddlefish but I live too far away to wet that appetite. Sturgeon are one of the best five fish I have ever eaten.

The paddlefish are very active swimmer and wont stop swimming. Plus they have zero personality. They are cool when you look at them but not cool for their husbandy....not so fun...as lots of species you can choose over the paddlefish, other "suitable" fishes can be cool and easy to take care of.

Oh yeah? Name a freshwater cooler than a paddlefish:woot:Actually I also think they would be far more trouble than they are worth to most people. I'm not so sure about the no personality, I would have thought the same thing about sturgeon but I've seen so many reports of sturgeons that come to be petted and such I am no longer sure that is true.
