These fish are protected in MN, but I don't know about elsewhere. Where do you find these? What are the rules about having them, or getting them?

Here's some general information on paddlefish: http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/rsg/profile.html?action=elementDetail&selectedElement=AFCAB01010

If you get a paddlefish it would have to be a captive bred one for it to have any semblance of being legal. In some places they are available about this time of year but the sources are tiny and hard to find. Sturgeons are moderately easier to come by but I agree that a paddlefish in a big tank would be impressive to say the least.

Getting paddlefish shipped out of the US will be difficult as they are listed on CITES Appendix II. However, there are some American paddlefish farming operations in China, Russia, and I believe in some of the central Asian republics as well. I don't know if you could buy young fish from these farms, but it's worth looking into at least.

moon- last year you were talking about raising a huge stock of brine (or maybe daphnia?) so that you would have a good food source, and then you were going to try and keep a paddle ...
any updates on that ???

-- and for the people who are going to be new to these guys, and try and keep them this year --- as i said last year in this thread, DO NOT DO IT !!! they aren't that cool at a small size, and they are next to impossible to keep alive. save yourself the $30-50 and look at pictures online.

At the moment my daphnia culture is coming online, finally, but I can't get the paddlefish, maybe next year. I do have a nice pair of flat bullheads!

I believe fugupuff raised some to a large size and they ate pellets, etc.

Yes you are correct, i was hoping to get them to eat Hikari micro pellets eventually. In hatcheries they are feed tiny pellets, the bigger the paddlefish the bigger the pellets. I think pellets that don't drop to the bottom quickly and stay in mid water as long as possible would be good. I was hoping to mix daphnia and micro pellets and wean them over to the pellets eventually. new fish will always eat live food better than pellets so i planned to use daphnia at first to get them used to feeding in their new surroundings then wean them onto pellets.
