It's not the focal point of the tank. It's a background. Nobody will be focusing on the background.

Three coats of paint? Cleaning brushes or rollers in between and afterwards? For a background??? Not in this lifetime.

A plastic tablecloth or shower curtain, or a garbage bag, or just a sheet of construction paper takes a couple minutes to cut to size and attach with tape. Takes even less time to remove if you want a change.
 
I spray paint the backs of 100% of my tanks. For about the last 5 or 6 years. After 25 years of ONLY EVER liking the look of a black background and HATING the water marks on any other kind of attachable background I have tried (plastic, various types of fabric, etc.), I decided to paint a couple and have never looked back.
