So I am thinking of using painted ceramic tile in my tank. As long as the tile is sealed I would imagine there would be no issues with the paint contaminating the water. I was also thinking of laying tile down on the bottom instead of substrate. As long as I provide plenty of bio media I think I should be ok w/o gravel. My only worry is that fish krap will gather at the bottom and look bad. Any thoughts?

yeah, clean it. You have to clean bare or tile bottom tanks a lot. This is why I switched to sand.
I have some great ideas for the tiles and it sounds like it will work fine. Any ideas on what i can spray/brush onto the tiles to make sure they are sealed and waterproof? Also, I do not want it to be permanant in the tank. Any ideas how I can put tile on the bottom and side walls yet remove them when if I needed to?
I have never used tile in my tanks before, I just don't like the look of them. Anyways, I would think that the tile needs to be completely sealed on not porous at all. The reason is that any crap, food, algae, etc... will go into the tile and you will have a hard time getting it off because the tile isn't completely sealed and you will always have to scrub the tile and still might not get it all off because it will be in the tile. I have used tile in in a tank before and honestly it was a pain.....you will constantly vacuuming the crap on top and the stuff that gets underneath them as well......so you WILL have to do this a lot.....especially underneath them!!!! If you don't do this the fish will get sick...I know I have learned from experience.....
If you really want to do it.........tile the whole bottom and silicone every seam so nothing gets underneath.....
otherwise.....don't do it at all...
