Saw this is in a lfs And the owner said the fish was painted. Is it just to grab someone’s attention? How long will this stay on the fish. The fish had no sign of any skin issues and seemed perfectly healthy.

From what I understand on "painted" fish is that the either lose their color over time or end up dieing earlier as a result of being physically tampered with. If it does survive to adult hood you can expect none of that added color to stay around. Least to say, I always feel sorry for these poor fish that get put through this kind of torcher. If you want to you can try to grow it out and see if it'll survive but no promises on that happening. From what I understand, it's roughly a 50:50 chance that it'll survive.
Just to be clear: the term "painted" is used in an attempt to spare the feelings of potential buyers, who might be justifiably horrified if they knew that the "paint" is a dye that is injected into the fish, not just slathered on the outside. This disgusting practice ranks right up there with docked ears and tails on certain dog breeds, or de-clawed cats.
The sooner people boycott these poor critters, the sooner this inhumane barbarism will fade from the marketplace...hopefully.
And, please, whatever you do...don't buy it in hopes of "rescuing" it. You will just be encouraging the greedy marketers to create more.
