Painted turtles or Red-Ear sliders

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
We have painteds and RES, the sliders tend to be more shy at an early age. Its really a matter of what color you like.

ive got red ears in my pond. i have fish with them, they will eat fish occasionally, but they wont go after the big ones unless they are badly wounded. but the turtles seem to go after the odd colored ones, like a pure white, a brown, and definately black. black moors have no luck in my pond, tried many times, not only are they black but their eyes resemble a pellet.

Do you see them much or they dive stay underwater when your around?

Do you bring them in when night temps in winter get cold?

I was digging a big pond for cichlids but realized talking to big cichlid pond owners you dont see them they hide 24/7 at min hug the side of the pond thus was looking at turtles.

I have foremouths and jewel cichlids in another pond I see them but nothing like the tiny assorted tropicals which stay in view all the time thus turtles for a large pond sound like an idea.

Was thinking of the yellow ear sliders

Thanks

We have 2 RES that are very friendly. We have 2 Florida red bellied cooters. One we have had quite a while. He is very friendly he will eat ou t of your hand. He will come up and watch you when you are out inn the yard. He is funny. When I feed the fish he comes up and watches. They love to bask in the sun. I have platforms enough for all 7 tutles to bask at the same time. It is fun to watch them stack on top each other. Boy do the love to eat my lily pads. I can't keep them in lily pads.

Forgot to mention they love the rain. When it is raining you see all there heads sticking out of the water like they are trying to catch the rain drops.

Thanks do you bring them in during cold spells?

I was thinking of a soil area for them to dig into around the pond which I would make as the soil here is sand with rocks hard as can be lol.
