Coating the PVC or ABS in gravel and sand looks really cool. I did this a number of years ago hastily but for the most part they still look good.

i've seen coating of the pvc done and it looks great. i plan on doing that also when i pick up more rocks to decorate the tank 
and the krylon fusion is like $4 a can, i bought some from pep boys and used it on my car bumper and hit holds up great.
