Painting tank back, what color?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a bunch of tanks in my fishroom with various shades of green backgrounds. The glass and water make them look one to two shades lighter in color and more blue FYI. Dark green looks a few shades lighter when water and lights on in tank. I have also painted quite a few tanks various shades of tan and brown. They look pretty good. Any latex paint left over from house projects work well. I clean the glass first with alcohol and paint on with a brush, takes a few coats.

Hot pink to match the gravel.... duh!

LOL!

It is easy to shade and blend with spray paint. I did one tank with midnight blue at the very bottom then a dark sand colored tan on the middle and a lighter sand color on the top. I was trying to make it look like the ocean getting darker at depths. It turned out very nice.

Spray the lower color first and leave a very feathered edge that diminishes into practically nothing. After the bottom color is dry spray over it with the top lighter color.

I prefer to spray paint a panel of styrofoam, and thereby get the added insulation it provides,
but prefer black, here are a couple of examples, some tanks came already painted.
I have also used some 3 dimensional backgrounds, and just cut out areas for needed overflows or other equipment,

I really want to use the one with a 3d background. I just think theres no way to do it without really damaging it. I made the background and its doable but this other one was cheep enough. Im currently working on the 3d background for my wife's angel tank but thats taking for ever. I was hoping to just paint this in a way that might add some depth to it.
I like the spray paint idea. Ive used black before on the backs of tanks. It looks fine just not the look I'm going for. Same with blue...well not really I don't like blue on tanks.
