Now the only other question I have is do I use flat, semi gloss, or a high gloss paint?

ftech69:
As far as the finish (flat, satin, semi gloss, high gloss) is concerned, it is really a matter of choice. They all do the same thing. [1] they make the outside of the back of your tank, black. [2] it will look the same, looking through the front of your tank, to the inside back piece of glass.

If you use a high gloss, it may or may not make the inside of the back look super high gloss. I do not feel the finish type matters as long as the glass is cleaned from all dirt and oil before applying the paint. I have used flat and high gloss on many of my tanks and I see no difference in the finish as viewed through the front of the tank. As I stated earlier, the finish is a matter of choice and of course what you and your pocketbook want to spend. Name brands really have no meaning. The paint in the rattle cans all cover glass when applied, but some cheaper brands I have found cause the nozzles to clog, however, this is not always the case. So again, it all a matter of your choice.

Now, if you are painting your trim, which usually most are made of plastic and yours happens to be a color or texture you're not happy with and you have a chosen color, I would deffinitely recommend using the Krylon Plastic spray paint for the trim, but not on the glass. This particular paint is designed to be used on plastics. Just be sure to lightly sand the trim with a 200 grit or finer paper, before you spray paint the trim, so the paint will adhere better to the trim and last longer, if not sanded it will wear off easier. I hope this information helps and I wish you the best of luck with your painting project.
