Ok, thanks! I wasn’t really planning on breeding, just hoped to get lucky.

If you accidentally breed fish that are of two different species, you would want to keep the fry in your home for their lifetimes (8 years). An average mbuna spawn can be 20 individuals so you may need a 55G or more just for the hybrids.

I don’t even know that these are different species, or opposite genders.

They're just saying that if they do have babies just don't go and resell them. No need to add more African hybrids to an already flooded African hybrid market.

Also if ya got them from an Assorted African tank at the LFS then there's a 90% chance that they are both hybrids already. As for what genders they are it's a coin toss.

Also if I was you, and had the tank space for it, I would add atleast a few more to the tank to help spread out aggression. With just 2 fish the aggression will all be one sided and eventually the less aggressive of the 2 will die.

There are 6 total fish, it’s 36 gallons
1 auratus
1 zebra (the boss)
1 johanni
1 demansoni
And the two new guys

I don't recommend keeping any of those in a 36" tank. In 6 to 12 months I would expect to have aggression problems.

An exception would be the demasoni if you kept them with their own species only in a large group. Demasoni is a difficult fish to keep so you may wish to avoid them for a first experience.

I second the demasoni being difficult, my experience is if you look at them wrong they get bloat

6 isn’t gonna be nearly enough, you’re kind of in a tough spot, a 36 is on the small side and the only way you’re gonna reduce aggression is to really pack that tank but then you’re going to have to do almost daily water changes. I would ditch those species and go with some bless aggressive types. You have some of the nastiest ones.

Well if you have both genders, you’re gonna end up with fry, it all depends on if you take the steps to raise them, even then some may survive

I have actually had the auratus, johanni, and zebra for over 2 years in there, they aren’t too bad with each other. I used to have up to 8, but eventually they killed mellower peacocks and spikes took out a few.
