Pair of cichlids for life ?

My male barred midas has started to chase away the female after 2 successful spawns. He has now paired with a smaller red devil female.... interesting developments

The female is safe until she is unable to spawn with the persistent male. The male will then try to drive the female away to make room for a new female. The term "bond" that gets thrown around in the aquarium trade is misleading. The only bond that ever exists is when a male and female combine their efforts to secure a territory, spawn, and defend the fry for 3-4 weeks. After that time frame, the bond ceases to exist.

I think you see more mate killing in larger fish for several reasons. One, the male is larger and can do significantly more damage in a short period of time. Two, big fish have larger territories, and the female can not escape the males attention. Lastly, it is easier for smaller fish to move out of sight in a aquarium with some cover.

My dovii pair have been together since 2", being the most dominant from a group of 11, they have spawned 4 times the last time being successful, anyway the male beat her up pretty bad wanting to spawn again too soon, after removing her for a few days and putting her back she's healed up the male follows her around like a puppy and a few weeks later she's in spawning colors again, anyway they have been together a year so far so good

swinging couples... all the regular couples are back together again... barred midas male is now back with the barred midas female.. same story with red devil pair....
